(Canary Island date palm)

 

As its name reveals, this palm comes from The Canary Island. Mature old trunk grow to 13m in cultivation , they are straight as an arrow and columnar, wit a diameter of 60-90cm. Young trunks are decidedly  bulbous, almost like a pineapple and are with large triangular leaf bases. The stem shows a beautiful pattern of horizontal elongated diamond shaped leaf base scars in closely spiral rings. The trunks are light or dark brown. The immense leaf crown is densely packed with often well over 100 leaves. The leaves are 3-6m long narrowly elliptical and olive green to deep green. The slightly arching leaves have stiff pointed leaflets growing from the rachis at slightly different angle and giving the leaf a V shape. The inflorescence is 60cm or more in length with many deep yellow-orange single branches that bear small yellow unisexual flowers. The brilliant Orange fruits are oblong and densely packed into broad heavy pendant clusters and they are edible.

The Canary Island date is among the most massive palms. It has a stately elegance that no other palm can surpass and at the same time is warm and almost motherly and protective. There is no finer plant for living avenues phoenix Canariensis is a wonder to behold.

In the palm’s habitat the leaves are used for weaving baskets and other utensils the young inflorescences provide sap which made into honey.

It the right environment will reach a height of 17m with a spread of 6-8m, it is drought tolerant and requires a minimum temperature range of -5, -10c

Canary Island date palm is the epitome of nobility. It has no equal in the formal garden and is superb for framing a multi-storey house.
