The best known and most popular passion fruit comes from Passiflora Edulis.

In Europe the fruit of The Edulis is the best known of the species. Apart from South America.

Passiflora Edulis is self pollinated and the more cold-tolerant form and does very well at elevations of 600-2000m. In Kenya is cultivated at an altitude of 2500m. The seedlings are planted 3m apart and the first crop is harvested in the following year. The average weight of the purple-brownish fruit is 35g. the very fragrant dark yellow pulp is 35% the fruit weight. It has a smooth leathery skin that begins to wrinkle after some day’s storage, the wrinkle indicates that it has gained its full flavour and maturity, but it can be stored for additional weeks and remain juicy. The aroma has a touch of wine and apricot.

Many prepared foods are made from this fruit, including multivitamin drinks, liqueurs, tropical punches, yogurts and ice cream. The fruit can be eaten raw. To this end it is cut into haves and the refreshing pulp is spooned out of the skin. The numerous blackish seeds can be eaten too.
