Traveler’s Palm

This native of Madagascar is a relative of bird of paradise  Its gracefully arched leaves are arranged in a single plane creating the appearance of a giant fan. The 3 to 4 meter long deep green leaves are smooth edged until the wind causes them to spit. Green bird of paradise flowers bracts conceal small white flowers that develop blue seeds when mature.

General care: Traveler’s palm is not particular about soil as long it contains some organic matter. The plant is a strong grower that needs regular water and fertilizer. It has little drought tolerance and fair salt tolerance. Pets, diseases and nutrient are rare.

Recommended uses: This is a large palm that should be viewed from a distance. It looks best when surrounded by open space or as a towering background specimen. It makes a great conversation piece.
