Passiflora alata with its beautiful fragrant flowers is a definite favourite among passion flowers. The pendant flowers are quite imposing. The charm of the flowers results from the deep red sepals and from the petals with a corona banded violet and white. The four angled stem is conspicuous for its more or less distinct wings. Passiflora alata is cultivated because of his edible fruit. Passiflora alata is closely related to Passiflora quadrangularis. The alata can be distinguished from Passiflora quandrangularis and the numerous other common crossbreeding. Passiflora quadrangularis can easily be distinguished from Passiflora alata by its stipules, which are 2-4.5cm ling and by the colour of his sepals. In principle cultivation of Passiflora alata is not very complicated. However 2or 3 years may go before young plants that were planted directly in the ground or in large containers start to flower. Often the plants use all their power to produce leaves at first,, beginning to set flowers only when the roots have completely permeated the potting mix.
