Passiflora
Passsion Flower

Passiflora plants, commonly known as passion flowers, can be grown outdoors. However there are many species and cultivars that need the protection of a greenhouse or conservatory to grow well. Passion flowers are grown for their beautiful flowers. They comprise an open circle of petals inside which sit a ring of bright coloured filaments that blend in contrast with colour of the petals. Fruits flows the flower and these are edible. The flowers come in shades of white, red orange-red, pink and purple. They flower throughout the summer.

Passiflora foetida, is a greenhouse or conservatory perennial vine that climbs with tendrils. It is an extremely polymorphic species. The stems are covered in stiff bristly hairs, with dark green 3-5 lobed leaves. They are very vigorous growers and need plenty of room to grow. The plants do extremely well in containers. The globose fruit is bright red to yellow and is edible. Since the species is polymorphic, flower color can range from white, to lilac and purple. Passiflora foetida need full sun to light shade, with a moist, well-drained soil. In the greenhouse, we use a soil mix consisting of 2 parts peat most to 2 parts loam to 1 part sand or perlite. Plants are well watered during the growing season and allowed to dry slightly before watering again. Fertilize them monthly with a balanced fertilizer. In late fall, we trim back the old growth to 3-4 nodes. During the winter months, water is somewhat restricted and fertilizer is withheld until new growth starts in spring.
